It's Been Almost 24hrs After I Soaked 10 Seeds In Water...7 floaters! Need help/tips

It's only 2 more days untill May 15th when most of us in N. America put the plants outside. However, as i was getting ready to germinate the seeds, I selected an always GOOD actually PERFECT method. That is i selected 10 seeds from my bag of seeds (which was collected from weed that I bought, I've collecting them in the same bag for 3 years now probably, however the bag of seeds is nicely tucked into the insider cover of a CD, and it is/was always held in darkness and never in too hot or too cold temperatures...so the seeds should definatley be good since they certainly look good and resistant...the nice big grey/green ones for example) but my main point is that I put into the can of water about 400mL...close to half a litre 500mL...without anything to cover it into my closet where it is dark and the temp is room temperature. Now I had put the seeds into the water can at exactly 3 or 4pm yesterday...today in the morning when i looked at the glass, it was in the SAME exact situation...10 floaters on the surface of the water. I read a post where a person whenever he has this problem he wrote he 'taps the seeds lightly while in the water so he/it can break the water surface tension' and this is what I did today when i woke up...after slightly tapping the seeds, 3 sank down pretty nicely, but the other 7 (out of which I can DEF see some GOOD ones) are still floating on the water surface. Some of the seeds (as if electrons and protons...are attracted to each other, you can notice this as whenever you make a tap into the glass of water to break the surface tension...they wander away a litte some almost make an attempt at sinking but as soon as the surface tension settles, most are very attracted to one another and it's as if one seed comes together with another seed, creating a pair of seeds, and so on)....and all these seeds or pairs of seeds do not float freely, but rather are hanging around only AND ONLY (at least it seems) on the round edges of the glass, basically it stays very close to the sides of the glass which is made out of plastic.

What should I do, what tips can you give me? Will the others sink in 12-24hrs from now? I remeber doing another soak last year just to test this method as well as to test my seeds..and remebered only now that back then too, out of the 5 seeds i had put i think 2 sunk early within 12hrs, and the others sunk too, except one i think but by the time the others had sunk the first two seeds that had first sunk had already busted and were showing a white tip so those were definaltey more than ready to be put into pots. This time i have a maximum of 7 buckets and i'm gonna grow 7 plants in buckets...i figure i might be left with 3 females and since growing in pots is pretty much my only option right now...that's the best i can do. However please, please give me some tips on how i can imporve the germination process considering the method i chose for the germination of the seeds. I don't know what to do...because i had put the extra 3 seeds just to make sure in case not all sank..but now it turns out i only put enough for not even half the pots...so far.

Another question is...how long and by long I mean what's the maximum amount of time to leave the seeds to germinate with the method i've chosen? In other words, when will it come the time where I will KNOW that if the seeds didn't sink or aren't sinking as i tap them lightly THEN it's time to quit and give up on those seeds.

This year I totaly forgot to soak my seeds in water. I put them in a plastic baggie between a wet paper towel and kept them in a dark area. They all sprouted between 24-36 hrs and are coming along fine. I dont know if soaking them really matters after all. Last year I did soak them with the same results.

I never soak my seeds. I place in a tupperware container between two wet paper towels. After this I usually place on my subwoofer of my computer speakers. I think the slight vibration really helps them, and it is also a little warm on the top.

I always soak my seeds for 24-36hours before placing them in wet paper towel, in a plastic bag, on a plate, all on top of a heating pad. For the floaters just give them so more time and give the container a little shake every now and then and they should sink. Scoop the floater out and put them in another container and put the sinkers in moist paper towel. Even if you seeds dont sink after 3 days of being in water there's no harm in putting them in wet paper towel. Floaters are usually duds but I've had one or 2 germ using the paper towel method after soaking in water.
    Good Luck,

To let everyone know, thank you very much and i've got 8 seeds out of the 10 that sank, but i knew that 2 seeds from the bunch were wierd looking (ex: didn't look like a full mature seed, etc). So I am well set and done and definatley very satisfied so far with the results. Thanks everybody.

BTW, as for what i said about Elzz forget about it, this is not a matter for the master :D.

Another quick question, how should one plant the seed after it is germinated or even sprouted...for example say that the seeds that sank, some will have spilt open on the bottom and one might be able to see a small white tip.

My question is how should one plant the seed, with the white tip pointing up towards the sky, or downward pointing towards the earth.
LoL alright basically what i'm asking is should i plant it with the tip pointing up or with the tip pointing down?

Tip down. I find germinating a funny thing. Since I alway get'em if they look viable and all I do is moisten a jiffy-7 and plant the seed crack tip down(You can tell where they'll crack, the end that was removed from the plant goes up.). Squeeze it gently to get excess water out because that can kill it as good as anything. Then I pop them in the germ dome and within a few days I have my sprouts. No paper towel, no soaking, just planting. You know, like everyone does with every other kind of plant.

24 hour soak in water, then into moist soil. Tips down. if they float, plant em anyways. They have thicker shells and just need more time for the water to soak in and saturate the seed to make it heavy enough to sink. Even seeds that are not viable will sink once they are saturated with water.

Hey Elzz, glad to hear from you. I have a 'bizzare' or not so bizzare situation. All the 10 seeds I had, including 2 of the 10 seeds which I though looked like halfs of seeds, or not matture seeds...and when i last posted I mentioned that 8 had sank. Well today I tapped them lightly, after they had been in water for 46 hours (less than 48 hours) they TOO also began to sink slowly but surely! So I planted them as well....Also I mentioned that my seeds I've gathered them from marijuana that i bought, and collected/kept them for 2-3 years....some 3 year old, some 2 year old, some from this year...i rarely get seeds in weed but i find them sometimes, rarely.

So I NEVER expected 100% germination, is this common, does it mean that all the seeds are good, or might the two seeds that I had some concerns about in terms of sprouting/germinating grow a plant but a wierd looking plant (ie; deficiencies, etc)?

Should I mention thank you to everybody or is that already implied;) Thanks everyone;)
