leaves raised on seedlings

I germinated some seeds about 9 days ago. There are in small rockwool cubes in a propagator under a CFL. They have one set of new leaves and starting to grow the second set. The leaves have started to raise up. They look healthy but raised, about 45 degrees upwards from horizontal. Any idea what could be causing this e.g. too hot.cold, lack/excess of water...?

Sounds to me as if they are "reaching" for the light. Is the CFL nice and close to the plant? Also, check to make sure that your 'cubes are as close to the first set of leaves as possible without touching them.

Given the choice of two options, I'd prefer leaves to be standing (@ a 45 degree upward angle) than hanging like a limp noodle. IMO, what you describe sounds like an enthused plant that's ready to grow!

    Good luck. :)

I've 2 pics of one of the seedlings. This is the worst one. Leaves are raised and dried out at the tips. All seedlings are growing slower than normal.

The tips of seedlings anywhere between 2-3 inches from the bulbs. The bulbs don't emit much heat although my digital thermometer says it about 32C under there. Not sure how accurate that is though. Room temp is about 18C maybe cooler.

they do look like something's up, but the new growth on the first picture is a good sign. of course "check ph and all" :p

make sure your thermometer is shaded so the lamp isn't shining on it :) but like said at icmag, i think leaves pointing up is a good sign, healthy plant...

i had this same problem on a seedling that i had given watered down flowering solution but it was too stong they stood up like that at first and then it burnt the edges of the leaves, if you have been feeding then id say maybe too much ferts?

i've only been feeding them pH 5.5 water (recommended for my strain) and root juice.

How is your air flow, it might not be temp alone, it might be hot stagnant air.

    Good morning,

In the pictures provided, it appears the cubes may be a bit too wet which could be the reason for the shrivelled looking leaf tip in those pics.. The indication of algae beginning to grow on the cube is a tell tale sign of too much moisture.

Unless these are destined for a hydro system, I wouldn't worry about it but, if there seedlings being started in rw cubes to plant into soil - i'd say could possibly be to much moisture.

Generally, I soak my cubes in 5.5 pH'd lukewarm water straight from the tap which comes from a well, not city water. I don't soak overnight as I haven't seen the reasons why, a few hours soaking seems to completely wet them just fine.

I shake several times while holding the cube cupped between my fingers to remove excess moisture leaving them just damp but, not dripping. Stick cuttings or sow a seed. I keep a double layer of paper towels on the bottom of the tray and leave the dome on until sprouts for seeds or roots for cuttings have begun to show.

After sprouts or roots are seen, the dome is held up on one side during the day for air to get in and alternate sides every day. I do this every day until the dome is no longer needed. I also use a heat mat during the winter to keep the roots warmer. This promotes faster root development and most often more of them.

I'd shake out some of that extra liquid being held in the cubes and see if they improve, but, as wave said, the second set of leaves appear much better. It is too soon to begin a feeding schedule on these youngin' at this early stage although i've been known a few times in the past to begin a feed regimen pretty early in the life cycle of a seedling/cutting with good results. No halving the solution in my situation was done, was given at full strength with little to no ill effects - just lots of growth early on. Your milage will vary.

Have a Great day and don't keep the cubes too wet. MJ at any stage prefers not to live in a bog.

listen up, leave 45 degrees off the stem is the classic tell tell sign the plants are ABSOLUTELY HAPPY WITH THEIR CONDITIONS , if nothing else is a miss with them and jsut perky as heck leaves, then you are doing fine. nothing wrong
