There are multiple threads, posts, etc. all over the forum concerning this matter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I think this system works (layman's terms):

If I have a Facebook account, I can "like" , "share" or "recommend" sites, etc. anywhere on the internet. After pressing "like", that information is sent to MY account as a "like", but the person has to click on that "like" to see the info...It's not something that's posted on their wall for all to view.

Let's assume this person who has a Facebook account is a legal grower. I would assume that he/she would only share, like, etc. what this person is currently doing. I would also think that the legal grower would be hesitant to share due to possible theft of their crop....that's what this site is for!

If this person "likes" your grow journal, and another Facebooker clicks on the link, they will be required to register to this site...I don't think most ppl would do this just for the fact that it takes time to register and most ppl don't take that time just to view a "like".

I would also like to add that you can see if anyone has "liked" anything you have posted, by scrolling down to the bottom of the page:

    ss_bms.png

This bar is unique for every page on this site; another way to see if anyone has been "stalking" you.

Let's assume you've taken all the necessary measures:
    • Your username to this site and FB,Twit and G+ DON'T MATCH (why would you?).
    • Pictures and info you've posted DON'T have identifying features.
    • You don't sell, tell or have a reeking grow room.
    • You have a legit license to grow medical marijuana; if not, you follow the above golden rules.
    • You have no identifying information in your profile.
    • You use a program to strip data from your pictures.
If all above have been covered, I don't see a reason for paranoia.

When Gardenscure existed we still had a forum full of paranoid threads in Security. Paranoia exists because it's a fear of the unknown. Someone from Gardenscure could've taken your info and posted it to Facebook, etc. without social media plugins & without your knowledge.

Here is an example of the social plugs Gardenscure had even back in the Hempcultivation days:

    ss_gc.png

For users still feeling paranoid, post your journal(s) in the private forum (if you have access).

PM me and I'll move your journal(s) (only).

Lastly, there's really nothing new here, the same security rules should apply, regardless.

You got that system down just about right there burnt! A few bits of info and it'll be allllllright :)
    1) There are sharing sites (Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit, etc), and there are social networks (Twitter, Facebook, G+, etc) that give you a bit more of a profile/personality online.

    2) The difference isn't just in what they do but also how they're brought up on external pages...for the most part, Digg/Reddit/etc have the same sharing link and have had them for the last few years (digg.com/?share=urlhere.com&title=Title of my grow here!) whereas Facebook/G+/Twitter go through many revisions of their sharing features so to keep all the websites using their sharing features on the same page, they have a very small script (<script>getShare('thissites.url')</script>), and this small function in turn pulls data from their servers that's up to date. So the difference is that the Digg/Reddit/etc links from GC/HC days and the Facebook/Twitter ones is that the Digg links didn't actually pull any data off their servers unless you forwardly clicked on the share link and went to their site and logged in. With the Facebook/Twitter ones, they're pulled from Facebook/Twitter servers EVERYTIME, sending where you are, the permalink, the title, and OH HEY, you're logged in, we'll remember this site for later when we need to retarget your ads...even if you don't click on it. ;)

    3) Likes are shown on profile pages by default. It doesn't if you have your privacy settings setup right...but most people don't. ;) Your aunt on Facebook can't see your journal you liked, but she will see "Jimmy liked pharmerPhranks boom boom room! on BuyMarijuanaSeeds.com"

So social privacy/security actually did kinda take a turn for the worst here...which is why I've disabled it even loading in my browser ;)
It's not time for tin-foil hats just yet, but it's also not time to dismiss social/internet privacy and security considering it's becoming a bigger deal now a days than most people think.
I don't think this was a feature that was brought in with tracking, or gov' invasion, or anything like that. If it were legal where I was and I was able to be more open about this, I'd probably still not tweet or Like it but it'd be an interesting outlet incase there were other people in my area/state with common interests to start a Growing Circle or something. I also don't think that it was considered that most people still aren't legal on these boards... :D

And not trying to stir up a bunch of aluminum head-ware or any anti-establishment thoughts, just wanting to give a bit more information. As I take it the number of web developers, much less security specialists, are far and few between with the online cannabis community. Which is rather sad since a lot of people become misinformed and I'd very much like to get stoned and talk nerdy with other stoners :D

If anyone wants more info in laymens terms, wants to talk nerdy, or would like me to point them to the lines of code where an iFrame is injected into the DOM pulling from Facebook.com and twitter.com on here I'd be more than happy to help. :)

I think it's an interesting option and certainly just the next step in a constant evolution which however slow, takes place in any online community.

I like that this new format has a similar function so we don't have even venture to outside sites unless we actively choose to do so.

These links could be cause for paranoia but staying up to date regarding privacy functions on social networking sites is ultimately important, as is not clicking buttons you do not want to execute their function.

I think flooding facebook on where to get seeds could be fun.

To add to the anti paranoia facts here...anyone at anytime in the past could have easily copied and pasted your pictures anywhere they wanted to. The only thing 'liking' pictures would do differently is maybe associate a fake online name to them, your fake online name...which would be an insignificant piece of info to anyone other than those familiar with this site and it's members.

John Smith for example could be browsing GC (the old GC) and found a picture he wanted to show his buddies, all he has to do is copy and paste that picture to any social site at all, and voila! Your pictures are somewhere other than this site, viewable by strangers. Point is this has been possible for a long time, since the dawn of the internet basically. Facebook and Twitter and whatever else have just made it slightly easier, like one step easier.

    Nice MG:MJ:.

There is never true safety anywhere for a stoner, we are a hunted species ; always have been and always will. [and someone your smoking with, will always get paranoid; make everyone nervous.lol]

I would rather be on the SeedMine platform security wise; thanks Chook:MJ: . We get scanned everytime here, whereas the old one had broken portals to go through everywhere. Added bonus here, is we can potentially recruit more stoners; provide safety with numbers.

One grow pic is much the same as another to the unstoned eye; cover any numbers, faces or streetsigns if you care to share.
