    Hi All,

Has anybody ever seen a poppy that starts with yellow tipped, tiny pods. When they are starting to open, they kind of look like dandy's. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is the first plant I've been able to grow.;)

Nope. Where did you get the beans?

I had to go to the store before Thursday to pick up some poppy seed.

They do not carry it in the spice aisle anymore. I had to ask for it at the cash register.

I was a little shocked. But after some thought, I'm curious if some of those seeds are viable.

There are hundreds if not a couple-few thousand in a tiny little container. what are the chances you get one to germinate?

I'm not interested in partaking in hard drugs (opium, coke, meth... others) you know, the ones you get hooked on and look like a zombie after long term use.

But that does not diminish my curiosity about the poppy seeds. I may try it one day when I'm particularily bored.

Ah yes, the irony. Yes, you will find numerous viable poppy seeds in even a bottle of McCormicks. Cast as one would normally while spreading poppy seeds. You will be surprised at how many of them will sprout. In fact you will have to thin the herd, poppies don't like being too crowded. As I recall they were all of a purple variety, at least with McCormicks.

Keep in mind that technically that it is a felony to grow Papaver somniferum in the US. I assume you don't live in the US. You don't, right?

We're getting a little off topic. Maybe the OP can enlighten us as to where he got his seeds.

Yes, I live in the US. But, I already grow pot in a state where we probably shouldn't. So, legality is already an accepted practice... Or the lack thereof.

I would not grow a poppy to maturity. I could not bring myself to use the substance. My wife would freak out, rightly so. And I refuse to keep secrets from her. AND it would take up space where I want a consumable plant to be.

I would sprout and play with it a little bit. That's all.

OP, do you have more input?

I am not sure about all all brands of poppy seed, but I assure you that "McCormicks Gourmet Collect" Poppy seeds are viable, and they grow just fine. I may even have a few pics of plants grown from them. Will take me a bit of searching, but the pics are in my computer somewhere.

Actually go onto a "poppy growing" forum, similar to this site. Alot of people use "spice" seed for their opium grows.

I don't grow them for the Opium, I have only tried it once and I hated it. I am pretty sure I am allergic to opiates because they make me quite sick... plus I think the buzz is horrible... I like to be able to function.

Ok, I found a pic. The seed for this Poppy Plant came straight from a bottle of "McCormicks". Also, as a estimate, there are about 3300 poppy seeds in a gram. The bottle I have from the store is 2.12oz. Over 100,000 seeds in this bottle.

Edit: I decided to take the pic down, I am a legal medical MJ patient, not a opium grower. I just like the appearance of the flowers... hate the drug.

You ingest alcoholic beverages don't you? I hate to be the one to break this to you but there is no harder drug than alcohol.

(By the way, poppy tea kicks ass).

I'm lucky if I drink one beer every six months. No, I don't drink. I haven't been intoxicated from alcohol in well over 20 years.

    Sorry to burst your bubble.
