safe distance to avoid cross pollination

I am getting ready to put some sprouts in the ground this week, I have several different spots scouted out, some with holes pre-dug and backfilled with organic soil. I have sprouts from 4 different strains, (hopefully both male and female sprouts from each strain). Each individual strain is going to make up one grow spot location.

Here is my question.. What is the minimum safe distance between each grow location as to not cross pollinate, and keeping the strains intact without cross breeding.

I have read where pollen can travel for miles and still be potent. Is this true??

yes, it can travel for miles. pay attention to the weather/wind patterns in the area. that will tell you how you want to place the plots, based on wind travel. you can minimize the potential pollen contamination that way. cull males asap. you have a roughly 2 to 3 week window for sexing, strain depending. id at least take the males out of the area, you could still collect pollen, if that is your ultimate goal, and still selectively pollinate, without seeding the entire crop.
