Is it possible to just restrict airflow to the stanley before the filter in order to slow the air down? That would make it significantly louder, wouldn't it?

You've been very helpful freakshow, I appreciate it.

well, they do tend to get louder when the airflow is restricted. For uber-stealth, I would go with a can filter or something like that.

I tried the stanley blowing through a diy can filter and a diy rubbermaid like afterburner's. I will admit that my diy's were not the best, but I saw the flaw with pushing air through a filter when I used the stanley. The efficiency of pulling air is that the carbon particles will be pulled to a screen/surface and will compact and not move. When I pushed air through the can filter, it pushed the carbon to the outside wall and made channels where the air would run through the filter without being scrubbed by the carbon.

After that run, I took the top off and packed the carbon as much as possible with more carbon. Same problem when pushing. That's when I read that (I forgot the brand) a manufacturer of these can filters states that they put them on a special vibrating platform to make the carbon settle in and pack itself. I don't have one of those and I imagine that is the main difference between what you pay for a DIY and a professionally made can filter.

A router speed controller works with all fans, Stanley fans all the way to can fans. You simply plug your fan into them and dial back the speed. This lowers the restriction on the fan since you are slowing it down to a more suitable cfm speed due to the restriction. This is one of the easy ways to buy a big fan and have the ability to scale it back when needed. Also, bigger fans running slower will sound quieter, for the most part.:2cents:

Hey speed, Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices .. Is that what you're talking about? Seems like that + a stanley could give you a really nice variable speed fan for far less than $100.
