To clear the air..is air tight necessary?

I was thinking about it today..after we hang our buds and dry them..we cure them in airtight jars. Whats the idea behind airtight? On greenhouse seeds videos they say dry your buds in brown paper bags for 3-5 months for best taste..do some people never use jars at all?

Has anyone ever tried the brown paper bag method? I know the idea is brown paper bags have very little moisture and thats the key.

i never leave my buds in a paper bag for 3-5 months. ever. thats too long, imo. im not going to put 14-16oz of pot in a paper bag for 3-5 months. yes, ive tried the paper bag method, back when i didnt grow so much, but still did not leave it in the bag that long, maybe 2 weeks, but not 3-5 months. it does work, but personally i just prefer drying it on a screen, and then storing it when its dry enough to smoke. buds left to dry that long, change too much, they change color, smell, etc. i guess it depends on the strain too, some strains dry and cure at different rates then others. if you are wanting to cure it, just put it in a jar and open the jar every day or every other day for a brief period of time, and you have pretty much the same effect.

Thanks for the input..i was just wondering if the air tight part did anything in particular at all.

airtight just means that the buds aren't getting as much oxygen, or allowing it to break down further. or only allows the breakdown to occur at a much slower rate. other then that, it extends the shelf life of the product. the idea with the paper bags is it wicks the moisture away thru the bag, since the bag is essentially a thick moisture sponge but its a porous paper. i just had to add that in there, since i didn't in a previous post, after re reading your OP again.

I've always thought it important to keep the buds completely airtight (after proper drying) as this eliminates oxidation which will cause your fine work to lose its flavour, potency and smell. Also, humidity won't be a problem either as air contains moisture, another enemy of freshly cured weed. Excess humidity in stored buds can change the flavour from lemony fresh to raggedy dirtweed.

I think that glass containers are better than plastic and I never store in the freezer, rather the fridge. The freezer will freeze the trichs, causing them to break off into shake. I think one good tip is to not handle the stored buds unless completely necessary as this will keep them better intact. I also like to wrap each cola in cling wrap and then place them into the glass containers. This elmininates any air and the buds will keep their fine aroma, flavour and potency for many months to come.

Just make sure your buds are properly dried (the ole bend and snap trick). :2cents:

    PS . . .

I have heard of placing the buds in brown paper bags and then placing into airtight containers, though I have never tried it. Since paper is porous, I don't want any possibility of moisture getting in or flavour and aroma getting out. Brown paper bags may be good for ripening vegetables or fruit but we aren't trying to ripen the weed any further, just trying to preserve its fresh harvest appeal.

    Good morning,

Though i've never tried the brown paper bag method of drying for one reason, I never agreed with the idea of having to remove said buds to rotate into a different bag so, the bottoms were on top and vise-a-versa. Every time you handle the end product, the possibility of trichomes being dislodged from the buds becomes reality.

All your hard work ends up being stuck to the sides and/or bottoms of the bags or jars you dry or cure in. I've always been one to think, once the product is finished drying (I dry in a old cardboard "Dell" computer box, thats had holes poked through all four sides and string strung on the inside). Branches of bud are trimmed to hang on string for upwards of two weeks in a darkly kept back bathroom where a ceiling fan runs 24/7 until dry.

This box sits on top of the clothes dryer directly under the ceiling fan with the top of the box held opened enough to allow air to be drawn up by the fan.

I'm thinking of graduating upto a clothes rack, like I believe it was Mr. Booty or Mr. brundt who said they use for hanging buds onto but, haven't gotten around to that yet. Why change what works already.

Two week slow dry in an air filled room (an air exchanger would be awesome but, not affordable) fresh air in, moisture ladened drawn out. Cure in glass, burping off the oxygen the plants expel for the short time before jar sealing. Store long term (as if i'm at this stage yet ...Not!) in a cool darkly kept location and forget..

I see in my future, stacked in rows according to strain, taped boxes each holding 9 - 1 qt Mason jars, wax sealed lids with an Oz of stash per jar. Dated and labelled with barcodes in an unused back bedroom waiting for consumption.
    Yep, someday ...

Have a Great day, i'm gonna smoke a bowl, close my eyes and envision that day long before its a reality.. cheers
